Man set to open ‘traditional’ pub at site of former Llandudno bar

Mostyn Street Ale House will open at the former Fat Cat Café Bar site on Mostyn Street on May 14.

Owner Shaun Ketley said the pub will sell locally-sourced real ale, IPAs, cider and traditional lagers, with plans for live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays.

‘Everyone welcome’

The pub will also have a pool table and host quiz nights as Shaun aims for the establishment to be a “friendly, relaxing atmosphere” where “everyone is welcome, locals and holiday makers”.

Shaun, who lives in Kinmel Bay, has owned several pubs, most recently the Cob & Pen in Rhyl.

“I’ve owned pubs for numerous years so I’m not new to it, and hopefully it’s a good vibe and we can let people get on with it,” he told the Pioneer.

“I was supposed to retire but I got a bit bored and that’s why I took this one on.

“I’ve done pubs for the last 15, 20 years and never done one in Llandudno.

“I love the place and come here quite often, and I just thought ‘why not?’ – I’ll give it a go and see what it’s like.”

Renovation

The soon-to-open pub is still undergoing renovation work, with new beer lines being installed and redecoration underway.

Shaun added: “It’s not just an ale house, it’s a normal pub with real ale, showing all the sports.

“It’s a traditional pub, to bring a bit of localness back to the area.

“I am waiting for a little more work to be done – just decorating it all, tidying it up, new lines are going in and the signs are not up yet.

“If all goes well, hopefully it will all be done before the 14th.”

The Fat Cat Café Bar issued a voluntary closure notice on its licence in November 2025.

This followed an inspection by North Wales Police, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Conwy Council and environmental health services earlier that month.
