Llandudno ‘wild west’ style pub brawl sees married couple and woman sentenced to alcohol abstinence

A married couple and a woman were sentenced to a teetotal Christmas and New Year after a “wild west” brawl in a pub.

Richard Steele, aged 55, taking a construction management degree, Kim Steele, aged 37, a carer, both of Harcourt Road, Llandudno, and her sister Karen Humphreys, aged 35, of Ffordd Elisabeth, Llandudno, a support worker, all admitted affray at the town’s Cross Keys pub in February last year.

Kim Steele had also assaulted a PC when the prosecution said she lunged at him, making contact with his body armour.

Caernarfon crown court heard Humphreys’s behaviour was described as “feral.”

A 57-year-old woman had been punched and had her hair pulled during the trouble. She had a black eye.

The judge, Recorder Simon Mills, said he didn’t believe what happened reflected on their abilities to do their normal work.

But he told the trio: “This was outrageous behaviour committed by all of you, in drink, for whatever reason.

“It’s completely shameful behaviour by three normally capable and respectable people with jobs, with courses and child care commitments.”

He said something had triggered the “wild west” brawl.

He imposed a three-month suspended jail term for each of them. But an alcohol abstinence monitoring requirement will last for 120 days, which the judge said would take them beyond Christmas and the New Year.

Defence counsel Ryan Rothwell said Mr Steele had been involved for about 60 seconds and trying to calm things. A tense situation got out of hand and there was remorse.

Mr Rothwell said the offence was out of character for the couple and it was sad to see them in court.

Patrick Gartland, for Humphreys, said she was disgusted with herself and the offence “incredibly out of character.”

Prosecutor Richard Edwards said about 20 people were believed to have become embroiled in the melee, either fighting or pulling customers apart. None of the defendants had any previous convictions.
